History

LMERC is a dedicated resource centre for Victorian teachers from all sectors. Fondly known as 'LMERC', it has gone through a number of changes of identity and location in the past 25 years. Over those years two crucial things have remained the same- its magnificent collection of books and resources, and the expertise and dedication of its librarians and library assistants. Through LMERC, thosands of teachers have been given practical pedagogical advice and resources to meet the diverse learning needs of their students. They have been better able to teach English, to nurture their students' love of language learning, to help them to fully develop global perspectives and cultural literacy, and to appreciate the multicultural world in which they live.
The flexibility of the LMERC collection to change and grow in the light of new education policies, changing student populations, and the needs of educators has ensured that is has been recognised through the years as an essential resource.

Services to non-metropolitan schools have always been a vital part of LMERC provision. Resources can be posted out to government school teachers in rural areas. The postage to the school is free but the school or teacher will need to pay the return postage fee.
Email or phone LMERC to order resources (theme, year levels/reading levels, formats). lmerc.library@edumail.vic.gov.au or ring 9349 1418.

New Arrival kits

EAL RPOs can request resources to be sent to schools receiving a newly arrived non-English speaking student. Most students will have attended an English Language school but some will not. Teachers and RPOs can request resources to enable mainstream teachers to assist students with low level English. Resources include teacher resources on teaching EAL in the mainstream setting, photocopiable activities and interactive CDs and DVDs, bilingual dictionaries and picture books, high interest -low literacy readers and activities for particular areas such as grammar, pronunciation, speaking and listening, phonics, pair work etc. Teachers should contact their EAL RPO in the first instance. RPOs can contact LMERC by email at lmerc.library@edumail.vic.gov.au .
